The Fifth-Generation BMW X5 Bets on Every Kind of Power

BMW’s fifth-generation X5 is arriving with an unusually broad answer to a simple question: what should power a modern premium SUV? Instead of choosing one route, the new model is designed around petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and, later, hydrogen fuel-cell drivetrains.

That makes the X5 the first BMW offered with five powertrain types. The strategy is less about indecision than geography. Charging access, fuel prices and long-distance driving patterns differ sharply between markets, and BMW wants one of its most important vehicles to remain relevant across all of them.

The iX5 changes the centre of gravity

The headline newcomer is the iX5 60 xDrive. BMW quotes up to 845 kilometres of WLTP range from its sixth-generation eDrive system, although final homologated figures may vary. An 800-volt architecture supports rapid charging, while bidirectional capability means the vehicle can potentially supply stored energy beyond simply moving itself.

New cylindrical battery cells are central to the package. The iX5 will also become the first fully electric BMW assembled at Plant Spartanburg in the United States, where X5 production has been based since the original arrived in 1999.

The hydrogen-powered iX5 will follow later. BMW says its third-generation fuel-cell system and new flat hydrogen-storage layout allow a projected range of up to 750 kilometres. It is a niche solution today, given the limited refuelling network, but the production commitment turns the X5 into a live test of several competing paths to lower-emission long-distance travel.

Neue Klasse technology reaches a familiar nameplate

Inside, the new X5 adopts BMW Panoramic iDrive, including a windscreen-wide projection area, a central display and an optional passenger screen. Slate is offered as a decorative surface, an unusual material choice intended to bring a more natural character to the cabin.

The exterior moves to BMW’s latest design language with a more upright front, vertically arranged illuminated kidney grille and new double-X lighting signatures. Electrically powered doors use small “Winglet” handles, while wheel sizes run as large as 23 inches.

Series production begins in August 2026. The first combustion-powered variants are scheduled to reach markets in late November, followed by electric and plug-in hybrid versions in early 2027. For African buyers, final availability will depend on regional distributors, but the larger point already matters: BMW is making drivetrain choice—not a single universal solution—the defining feature of its next X5.
