The Vauxhall Mokka GSE is an electric crossover with the specifications of a serious hot hatch: 281 hp, a mechanical limited-slip differential and chassis lessons drawn directly from rallying.
It is the first fully electric model in Vauxhall’s revived GSE performance line. Power comes from a front-mounted motor producing 207 kW and 345 Nm, enough for 0–62 mph in 5.9 seconds and a 124 mph top speed. Those figures make it Vauxhall’s fastest electric production model.
More than a software upgrade
Performance EVs often rely on extra power and an aggressive drive mode. Vauxhall has gone deeper. A Torsen limited-slip differential manages torque across the front axle, while the suspension receives stiffer springs, revised dampers, upgraded axles and a new rear anti-roll bar. The ride height is lower, and the steering rack is quicker.
Stopping power comes from four-piston Alcon front calipers and 380 mm discs. In Sport mode the car uses friction braking exclusively, giving the driver a more consistent pedal response during hard use rather than blending in regenerative braking.
The connection to competition is tangible. The road car shares its motor, inverter, 54 kWh battery and wiring with the Mokka GSE Rally. Software and battery management differ for competition, but the common hardware gives Vauxhall a credible route for lessons from stage conditions to influence production development.
Range takes a secondary role
Official WLTP range reaches 209 miles with the most efficient tyre option. That is modest beside long-range family EVs, but the Mokka GSE is pitched around response and control rather than motorway records. Standard 20-inch wheels wear performance-focused tyres, and the cabin adds heated Alcantara bucket seats, aluminium pedals and displays for acceleration, torque and G-force data.
The £36,995 UK list price is market-specific, and Vauxhall does not operate as a mainstream badge in most African countries. Even so, the engineering direction has wider relevance. Electric performance does not have to mean a two-tonne luxury saloon chasing a dramatic acceleration number. A smaller, front-driven crossover can be made interesting through differential tuning, brakes and chassis discipline.
That may be the Mokka GSE’s most valuable contribution: it treats the EV era as an opportunity to rediscover attainable performance, not merely to add batteries to increasingly expensive cars.
